Hi all!
I'm considering getting a pet however I have a slight problem. I have alergies.. I'm horribly alergic to cats (though I love them!) and I'm somewhat alergic to dogs.
Does anyone know of alergenic free pets? Breeds? Anything?
Thanks!
I have done research on it but I'm curious of other opinions.
Canaries do not cause allergies. Some parrots, especially the Australian varieties, do cause allergies though most humans don't recognize it. It is the dust.
But a male singing canary is a beautiful thing: you cannot cuddle them, but their song for us as the blind is like the looks of colorful fish in a nice pond are for the sighted I think.
You should first read up on the canary as a pet, and select a cage that is appropriate. They are most interestee in flight rather than climbing and most cages now are more suitable for parrot species but they make for enjoyable pets. You will need to constantly sweep up their seed and keep the cage clean but I have owned different varieties of birds over the years and canaries I have found to be the most enjoyable.
They are not interested in being petted, or handled, though when you need to you can in order to check things like the state of their keel to see they are fed well. They do not generate any dust and even their foraging and bathing are enjoyable sounds to listen to.
Aww, they sound so cute! To bad you can't hold them though..what other pets?
Hmm. A pet rock?
Leo's last post said it best; that would've been my response, too.
How about a Sugar Glider? Check them out at www.sugarglider.com my daughter has 4 of them and they are like mini squirls... so cute!!!
that's neat a glider..i've heard of them but i've never seen one.
Lol pet rock haha! Well you don't have to clean up after it lol!
i've heard boxers are good for people alergic to dogs, but other then that, and birds. i don't really know.
There is no such thing as an alergenic free pet, other than maybe a fish or a rock. All pets, even birds, have certain things which some people can be alergic too. Hell, some people are even alergic to themselves, or to grass.
Some breeds of dogs, the labradoodle for example, have been touted as being alergenic free, but that is a myth. It is true they don't shed like other dogs, but A. all dogs shed, just some faster than others, and B. you aren't alergic to the fur of the dog, you're alergic to the chemicals in the skin of the dog. Its an easy mistake to make.
Your best bet would be to expose yourself to different breeds of dog, or sugar gliders, or birds, or hampsters, or whatever, and find out which effect you and which don't. However, there are dozens of other things you should keep in mind first. Do you have the room for a certain dog/bird/sugarglider? Do you have the expertise to train it? Do you have the time to devote to its needs? And the list goes on and on and on.
Thanks so much Dragon!
Lightning, thank you so much for your advice and you are absolutely right. My friend has a Moltese (sp?) and the dog doesn't bother me when I'm around it.
I know my apartment could handle a small dog, however I do not think this is the time for me to be getting a pet due to some circumstances. However, that does not mean that I don't like to look around.. :) Can't help it! I love cats..wish I could have one! Now I'm just wining lol..XD If anyone else has thoughts/suggestions feel free to still leave them here or pm me. :)
